Galveston County residents who want to help run the Nov. 3 election can still apply to work the polls, though positions are not guaranteed.
Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 19, and runs through Oct. 30 across the county, including four locations in League City. The general election follows on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Galveston County directs prospective poll workers to its online Poll Worker Portal or to call 409-770-5108, as reported by KPRC 2. Early Voting Clerk Dwight D. Sullivan's office handles placement and training. Applicants should ask whether assignments for the Nov. 3 election remain available and confirm training dates, pay rates and expected hours.
Who qualifies
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and qualified voters in the jurisdiction conducting the election, according to requirements the Texas Secretary of State lists. Galveston County applicants should confirm specific requirements for the position they want.
Pay varies by county and position. The county elections office can provide its current pay rate, training-pay conditions and payment schedule.
High school students can serve too
Texas runs a student election-clerk program open to students who are at least 16 years old on Election Day. According to the Texas Secretary of State's student clerk page, a student enrolled in a public, private or home school may serve as an election clerk with written consent from a parent or guardian and, for public and private school students, the school principal.
Student clerks are paid the same as other election clerks, according to the Secretary of State's office. The work also counts as an excused absence under the Texas Education Code.
No more than two student clerks may serve at a standard polling place. Up to four may serve at a countywide polling place. Students can work outside their home precinct if openings exist.
The Galveston County elections website links to the state's student clerk page for families interested in the program.
