League City's Building Department now offers inspections on Fridays after shifting its staff to four 10-hour workdays.

The city announced the change on Tuesday, Aug. 25, saying the longer days let inspectors handle more appointments and offer earlier and later time slots. Homeowners, contractors and developers waiting on building inspections should see shorter wait times as a result.

The city's Chief Building Official proposed the schedule under League City's Elevate Program, an internal training and continuous improvement initiative that encourages employees to streamline processes and improve customer service. The city described the shift as an example of employees working to make services more efficient and responsive to a growing community, according to a city announcement.

The new hours are already in effect.

The 10-hour days stretch the window for scheduling, which the city said reduces the time customers wait for an inspector to arrive. Friday availability is new; the department previously did not conduct inspections that day.

The scheduling change comes as League City prepares for a wave of residential construction. Hines, the global real estate firm, plans to build 2,730 single-family homes on 1,532 acres north of FM 517, with first lots expected in late 2027. Hillwood Communities is separately developing 1,630 homes on 700 acres near League City Parkway and Legacy Drive, according to Yahoo News.

The city already uses an online Citizen Self-Service Portal for building permit submittals. The Planning Department began accepting plat, zoning and other planning applications through the same system on April 1, 2025.

City Council approved a broader Development Services Strategic Plan on July 9, 2024, after gathering input from citizens, contractors, builders, developers and engineers. The inspection schedule change aligns with that plan's goal of improving the permitting process.
