League City Animal Care has now maintained no-kill status for four consecutive years, the city announced Sunday, Aug. 16.
Best Friends Animal Society recognized LCAC for achieving a live release rate of 90% or higher in 2025, the nationally accepted threshold for no-kill designation. The shelter, at 755 W. Walker St., is one of 17 Houston-area facilities that met the benchmark last year, according to KPRC 2 reporting.
As we reported July 30, LCAC earned the 2025 recognition earlier this summer. What's new: a four-year streak. The city's official announcement confirmed this is the fourth consecutive year the shelter has cleared the 90% mark.
A live release rate counts animals that leave through adoption, return to their owner or transfer to another organization. More than two-thirds of shelters nationwide now meet the 90% standard, according to Best Friends Animal Society.
The city credited the milestone to reunions with families, adoptions, foster placements, medical treatment and rescue partnerships, calling it a reflection of collective community effort by LCAC staff, volunteers, foster families, adopters and rescue partners.
No-kill status does not mean euthanasia never occurs. LCAC still uses humane euthanasia for animals with untreatable medical suffering or behavior that poses a significant safety risk. Every animal is evaluated individually based on medical and behavioral assessments, quality of life and public safety.
Residents looking to help keep the streak going have a built-in opportunity this month. LCAC is participating in the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign through Aug. 31, offering 50% off adoption fees. Most pets are regularly $75 to adopt, and all come spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
The shelter is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Contact: (281) 554-1377.
