League City firefighters were among mutual aid crews from five departments that joined Texas City firefighters battling a structure fire at a vacant building on Wednesday, Aug. 19, that sent one firefighter to the hospital.
The firefighter was reported in stable condition, according to KGTX 7 News. No civilians were injured. The Texas City Fire Department has not identified which department the hospitalized firefighter belongs to or released the firefighter's name.
Texas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Royce Medina said crews were dispatched at 4:06 p.m. to the 1200 block of 21st Street North after a report of a commercial structure fire. The property is the former Tradewind Theater, which was vacant and boarded up at the time.
Medina said arriving crews found smoke and flames coming from the building and launched an initial attack before the fire's intensity forced them to call for backup. Mutual aid was requested from San Leon, Dickinson, League City, La Marque and Santa Fe fire departments, bringing the total response to six agencies.
Firefighters located the main body of the fire toward the rear of the building. The blaze was extinguished Wednesday afternoon.
The fire's cause remains under investigation.
