League City residents 55 and older can sign up now for a full slate of free fitness classes, social activities and arts programs running August through October at Hometown Heroes Park.

The city's Parks & Recreation department released its Fall 2026 Senior Program Guide, listing more than a dozen weekday offerings at the recreation center at 1001 E. League City Pkwy. Membership is free. Residents register in person with a photo ID and proof of residency such as a utility bill.

Fitness options include daily Zumba, Cardio Dance, yoga and Pilatai classes, plus Cardio Drumming on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Line Dance meets Tuesdays through Thursdays, and a Strength & Conditioning class on Mondays and Wednesdays is geared toward those recovering from surgery or illness or just starting an exercise program. Water Aerobics runs Mondays and Wednesdays through Sept. 7 at the Hometown Heroes Pool.

Gina Gills, who has taught Zumba at Hometown Heroes for nine years, retired after a 45-year aerospace career before picking up the instructor role. A League City resident of more than 40 years, Gills describes the spirit of her classes in the program guide: "I always say, 'Dress like Skittles for Zumba.' It gives you permission to be bright."

Jay and Barbara Giger moved to League City from the New York area in August 2023 to be near their daughter. Their favorite class is Pilatai. In the guide, the couple encouraged newcomers to give it a try, saying the program helps with loneliness because participants are bound to find someone they enjoy talking to.

Beyond fitness, the guide lists Mahjong for beginners, Bingo on the first and third Tuesdays, Social Dance on Mondays, Watercolor Lessons on Tuesdays, Ballroom Dance on Wednesdays and a monthly "Let's Get Crafty" session on Thursdays.

Free weekday lunch

Galveston County residents 60 and older can eat a free hot lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to noon in the Multi-Purpose Room. The program, provided through the Houston-Galveston Area Council of Aging in partnership with Galveston County Parks & Senior Services, is not need-based. Anyone who meets the age and residency requirements can enroll by completing an application on-site.

The League City Lions Club also serves a free hot breakfast for seniors and first responders on the first Sunday of every month at 7:30 a.m. in the same room.

Library and community extras

Helen Hall Library offers its own free fall programming, including the Every Stitch Way needlework group on Tuesdays, a Daytime Book Club on third Fridays, Basic Computer & Small Device Skills classes on Wednesdays and Medicare Explained seminars with Shari Ferguson on second Tuesdays and second Saturdays. The library's Bookmobile also visits senior communities including Wellby, The Crossings, Lake Haven and Regal Estates on a rotating schedule.

Residents 60 and older can apply for a free CCISD Senior Gold Card at the district's Education Support Center, 2425 E. Main St., for admission to home athletic events and most fine arts performances.
