Bay Area Service Teens delivered 280 birthday party kits to at-risk elementary students in Clear Creek ISD and Dickinson ISD during the 2025–26 program year.
The program, called Birthday in a Box, gives students who might not otherwise celebrate their birthdays a box containing cupcake supplies, a gift and a handwritten card from a teen volunteer. Kits are assembled after each membership meeting from September through April.
Birthday in a Box partners with Communities In Schools – Bay Area (CIS–Bay Area) to identify students at four campuses: League City Elementary and McWhirter Elementary in Clear Creek ISD, and K.E. Little Elementary and San Leon Elementary in Dickinson ISD.
Bay Area Service Teens is the all-teen auxiliary of Bay Area Service League, a League City-based volunteer organization. The group announced the start of the new program year on Sept. 30, and kit assembly is underway again for the 2026–27 school year.
The program launched in 2005. It began at a single campus, McWhirter Elementary, according to the organization's program page, and has since expanded to four schools across two districts.
Emily Koyfman, a Clear Creek High School sophomore who serves as assistant auxiliary treasurer for Bay Area Service Teens, said in a June 28 profile on the league's website that Birthday in a Box is her favorite program because it brings joy to children who might not otherwise celebrate their birthdays.
The teen volunteers logged 3,411.5 hours of service across all seven of their philanthropic programs between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026, according to the league's year-end recap. Those seven programs include Basic Kneads, which addresses food insecurity, Cause for Paws, which supports local animal shelters, Crafted with Care, Notes for Folks, Ready for School Support and Project Snuggle.
Bay Area Service Teens marked its 30th anniversary on Aug. 18. The group has operated since 1996. The broader Bay Area Service League contributed an estimated $1.2 million in volunteer value to the Houston-Galveston Bay Area during the same program year, based on 33,226.75 total service hours valued at $36.41 per hour by the Independent Sector.
Kit assembly continues through April at monthly membership meetings. Volunteer and meeting information is available on the Bay Area Service League website.
