Eighteen LyondellBasell employees logged more than 63 hours in August and September shopping for school clothes for area students through Bay Area Service League's Ready For School program.

Ready For School is Bay Area Service League's largest program. It provides school-appropriate clothing, shoes, socks, underwear, jackets and hygiene kits to students from pre-K through 12th grade across nine school districts in Southeast Harris and Galveston counties, including Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD and Friendswood ISD.

At a Shop & Deliver event at Baybrook Target on Wednesday, Aug. 26, eight of the LyondellBasell volunteers worked alongside Bay Area Service League members and Target staff. They filled individual clothing requests based on each student's preferences and school dress codes, according to a Bay Area Service League recap of the event. Each student also received books. League members then delivered the bags directly to students' campuses.

One volunteer brought the whole family. Amy Davidson shopped with her daughter Denali, who celebrated her first birthday at the Aug. 26 event. Bay Area Service League called Denali the program's youngest volunteer to date.

The nonprofit wrote on its website Sept. 30 that the LyondellBasell volunteers' enthusiasm motivated its own members. The 18 volunteers, including Denali, ranged from first-time participants to experienced community organizers.

In Bay Area Service League's Sept. 5 recap of the shopping event, one unidentified LyondellBasell volunteer said, "It was a great experience with a lot of help and guidance, and I'll be taking part in this organization in the future!"

Bay Area Service League said it plans to collaborate with LyondellBasell volunteers again in October, though no specific date has been announced. The program also partners with JCPenney locations at Baybrook, League City and Pasadena for in-store shopping events throughout the school year.
