League City voters will choose between incumbent Sean Saunders and challenger Teresa Potter for City Council Position 7 on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The at-large seat represents the entire city, not a specific district. Both candidates answered standardized questions in a Community Impact Q&A published Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Saunders, an EMS operations captain, said he is seeking re-election to continue work on fiscal responsibility, public safety, roads, drainage and mobility. He called managing growth while protecting quality of life the city's greatest challenge.
"We have to plan ahead for roads, drainage, water and wastewater, and public safety so we are not constantly playing catch-up or leaving existing residents to carry the cost," Saunders said.
Potter, executive director at the Galveston Arts Center and a former League City city librarian, said residents deserve leadership that brings people together. She said she contributes more than 200 hours of annual volunteer service. Her top priorities center on communicating with residents about agenda items and policy changes before and after council meetings. She also wants to incorporate council into the city's "League City Listens" interactive tool.
On the budget, Saunders said the city should eliminate unnecessary spending and keep the tax burden low. Potter said the city should finish high-priority drainage and water capital improvement projects while diversifying revenue.
The race is one of six contests on the League City ballot. The city's elections page also lists races for mayor, council positions 1, 2, 3 and 6. A nonbinding Ballot Proposition A will ask voters whether the police department should continue using automated license plate reader cameras on public roadways.
Council members serve four-year terms and receive a stipend for attending meetings and performing other duties. Members may not serve more than two consecutive terms in the same position.
Voter registration closes Monday, Oct. 5. Early voting runs Monday, Oct. 19 through Friday, Oct. 30 at four League City locations, including the League City Annex at 174 Calder Rd. and Hometown Heroes Park at 1001 E. League City Pkwy. Election Day polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
