Galveston County health inspectors found beef and shrimp held at 45 degrees Fahrenheit at Sushi Moshi, 220 Gulf Freeway South, during a September inspection.

The violations were first reported by KGTX 7 on Oct. 12. Cold foods that need temperature control must stay at 41 degrees or below to limit bacterial growth, according to the report.

Inspectors also found cooked and prepared items, including noodles and stuffed clams, sitting in a walk-in cooler without required date markings showing when the food had to be used by. The report noted that kitchen employees who handle food must obtain food handler certification within 30 days.

Sushi Moshi was one of four Galveston County establishments cited for violations in the September round. Three others, all outside League City, were also flagged.

Another League City restaurant fared well. Smiley's Wok and Sushi, on the 200 block of FM 270, earned a spot on the county's "Kudos Report" for receiving a high inspection score during the same period.

Under the Galveston County Health District's scoring system, violations carry demerit values of 1, 2 or 3 points, with higher values signaling a greater risk of foodborne illness. Scores range from 0 to 100 demerits, and a zero means no violations were found. The GCHD notes that many violations are corrected before the inspector leaves.

No numeric demerit scores for either Sushi Moshi or Smiley's Wok and Sushi were included in the report. The health district conducts follow-up inspections as needed, and no reinspection date for Sushi Moshi has been announced.
