A frozen berry blend sold at Walmart stores across Texas is under recall over possible E. coli contamination. League City shoppers should check their freezers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated the recall Sept. 11, confirming that Chilean supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. expanded the affected area for Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend to 26 states and Puerto Rico. Texas is among them.

The recalled product is a 10-ounce package with UPC 78742-11226, lot code 6040 01-6 and a "best if used by" date of Feb. 9, 2028, Click2Houston reported. The blend contains strawberries, blackberries and blueberries.

League City has two Walmart locations: a Supercenter at 1701 W FM 646 Rd and a Neighborhood Market at 2625 W Main St. The FDA said the recalled lot shipped to "select" stores in the affected states, so not every location necessarily received it. Shoppers should check the lot code printed on any bag in their freezer.

No illnesses have been tied to this specific triple berry blend lot, according to Rolling Out. The recall is a precautionary step. Traceback from an earlier recall of GreenWise-brand frozen organic blueberries, also supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur, linked the supplier to an ongoing E. coli O145:H28 outbreak.

That outbreak, first identified July 1 when the Florida Department of Health notified the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has sickened 17 people and hospitalized six, with no deaths. All reported cases are in Florida and Georgia. The last illness onset was Aug. 2.

The FDA said consumers should not eat, sell or serve the recalled berries. Shoppers can throw the product away or return it to Walmart for a full refund. The agency also recommends cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces or containers that touched the recalled berries.

E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing strain. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, nausea and vomiting. They can appear anywhere from a few days to nine days after eating contaminated food. Some infections lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Anyone who ate the recalled berries and develops symptoms should contact a health care provider.

The FDA has placed products from Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur on Import Alert 99-35, meaning the firm's frozen blueberries may be detained at the U.S. border without physical examination. The investigation remains ongoing.
