Clear Creek ISD's 38,000-plus students head back to class Wednesday, Aug. 12, but families with younger or incoming students should circle Tuesday, Aug. 11, first.
Pre-K, kindergarten, sixth-grade and ninth-grade students report a day early for a transition and orientation session, according to KGTX7 News. That means incoming freshmen at Clear Springs, Clear Creek and Clear Falls high schools, along with new sixth-graders entering the district's middle schools, get a smaller-crowd introduction to their campuses before the full student body arrives.
All other CCISD students begin Wednesday.
As we reported July 29, the district's start date aligns with most Galveston County school systems. League City police have already announced stepped-up school zone patrols for the first week.
Clear Tech virtual school launches simultaneously
Families looking for a different model have a new option this fall. CCISD and Texas Tech K-12 are launching Clear Tech, a tuition-free, full-time virtual program for students in grades 3 through 9. Additional grade levels will be added each year.
Clear Tech students remain enrolled in CCISD and follow the district's academic calendar but complete coursework on a flexible, asynchronous schedule taught by Texas-certified educators. They retain access to counseling, college-planning tools and extracurricular activities at their home campus.
Superintendent Dr. Karen Engle called the program "the future of public education," saying the partnership "allows us to meet students where they are while keeping them connected to a vibrant public school community." Families can check enrollment status at cleartech.ccisd.net.
Free and reduced meal applications open now
Families who qualified for free or reduced-price meals last year must submit a new application for 2026-27. A household of four earning up to $42,900 annually qualifies for free meals; up to $61,050 qualifies for reduced-price meals, KGTX7 reported.
Applications are accepted year-round at schoolcafe.com/clearcreekisd. Families receiving SNAP, Medicaid, TANF or FDPIR benefits may qualify by providing their Eligibility Determination Group number. Questions can go to CCISD Child Nutrition Services at 281-284-0712.
$23.4 million shortfall looms over the school year
The back-to-school buzz arrives against a tighter financial backdrop. CCISD faces a projected $23.4 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2026-27, driven in part by an 8.5% enrollment decline since 2019 and a 38% rise in special education enrollment, according to Community Impact.
The board is weighing a $19.1 million voter-approved tax rate election to close the gap. On Monday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m., trustees will hold a public hearing on the budget and proposed tax rate at the CCISD Education Support Center boardroom, 2425 E. Main St. in League City.
"We really invite our community to engage in discussions with their state elected officials," District 3 trustee Arturo Sanchez said at the July 27 board meeting, when trustees approved a smaller teacher pay raise than the prior year, according to Community Impact. "While we all appreciate lower taxes ... we also appreciate an environment where students can learn and thrive."
The Monday, Aug. 24, hearing is open to the public. The proposed tax rate is unchanged from the previous two years.
