Galveston County cut the ribbon on its first-ever dog park Wednesday, July 29, adding an off-leash destination to the 678-acre Jack Brooks Park in Hitchcock accessible via Highway 6 for League City residents.

The park is now open.

The county marked the occasion with what it called a "Ribbon Cutting & Bone Breaking Ceremony," drawing staff from the Galveston County Animal Resource Center, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit, and the nonprofit Animal Alliance. All three organizations brought dogs to christen the new space.

Galveston County said the dog park is an exciting addition to its park system for constituents and their pets in a post on X announcing the opening. The county thanked the three organizations for showing up with their furry friends to support the milestone.

The dog park joins an already long list of amenities at Jack Brooks Park, which sits at the intersection of FM 2004 and State Highway 6 at 5700 FM 2004, Hitchcock, TX 77563. The park offers a public archery range, baseball and soccer fields, basketball and volleyball courts, canoe launches, a rodeo arena, a golf course, roughly 6.5 miles of mountain bike singletrack, and picnic areas with restrooms.

The county has not yet published specific details about the dog park's layout, including whether it has separate areas for large and small dogs, fencing specifications, or posted hours.
