League City families looking to adopt a pet can do so for about $37.50 through Monday, Aug. 31, as League City Animal Care offers half off its usual $75 fee during the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign.
The shelter at 755 W. Walker St. launched the promotion Aug. 1 to help move animals out during what the city described as a particularly challenging time for shelters, citing summer overcrowding and increased intakes. Every adopted pet comes spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
The deal gets even better on Saturday, Aug. 29, when the shelter hosts a Late Night Adopt-A-Thon Glow Party from 8 p.m. to midnight with completely free adoptions, space-themed activities, galaxy crafts for kids and a cosmic playlist.
League City Animal Care earned no-kill recognition from Best Friends Animal Society in July after achieving a live release rate of 90% or higher in 2025, as we reported July 30. That rate measures the percentage of animals leaving through positive outcomes like adoption, return to owner or transfer to a rescue organization.
Clear the Shelters is organized by NBCUniversal Local in partnership with hundreds of shelters each August. Since 2015, the initiative has helped more than 1.3 million pets find homes nationally and raised more than $5.6 million for participating shelters and rescues.
The shelter is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed Mondays and Wednesdays. Prospective adopters can browse available pets on the city's website or visit in person. The shelter's phone number is (281) 554-1377.
