Mayor Nick Long's community carnival raised more than $2,100 for the League City Animal Care & Adoption Center (LCAC).

Long announced the total on X on Monday, Sept. 7. "Our Community Carnival was a big success and we raised over $2,100 to support the League City Animal Shelter's No Kill mission," he wrote.

The carnival, held Saturday, Sept. 5, was free to attend, Long said in a Sept. 4 post on X. He described it as a repeat of a previous carnival held a few years ago that helped fund extras at the city's dog park. He said he hoped this year's event would top that effort.

The funds go to a shelter on a streak. Best Friends Animal Society has recognized LCAC for achieving a live release rate of 90% or higher for the fourth consecutive year, according to a city announcement. A live release rate measures the share of animals that leave a shelter through adoption, return to an owner or transfer to a rescue organization.

The city said the recognition reflects work by staff, volunteers, foster families and rescue partners to get animals adopted, reunited with owners or placed with rescue organizations.

The carnival fundraiser caps a busy stretch for the shelter. During August, LCAC took part in the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign, offering 50% off adoption fees. The regular adoption fee is $75.

LCAC is a department of League City's city government, located at 755 W. Walker St. The adoption center is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed Mondays and Wednesdays.
