League City could take ownership of the 86-acre Walter Hall Park along Clear Creek at no cost after Galveston County offered to hand over the Highway 3 property.

Mayor Nick Long and Chien Wei, the city's parks and cultural services director, outlined the potential acquisition at a July 14 City Council work session, as Community Impact reported. No formal vote has been taken, but the city and county will negotiate a transfer timeline over the coming months.

"I think it's a great opportunity for us to add a significant amount of parkland at no cost," Long said in a city-posted video in July.

The county made the first move. Long said Galveston County approached League City and asked whether the city wanted to take over the park at 807 State Highway 3 North. If the deal goes through, the property would shift from the county's portfolio into League City's, boosting the city's roughly 900 acres of municipal parkland by nearly 10%.

Why the city wants it

Wei told the July 14 workshop that League City has "outgrown its current maintenance facilities." Walter Hall Park's existing storage buildings would let the parks department house equipment on-site, avoiding the higher cost of buying undeveloped land elsewhere for that purpose.

The park already has baseball and soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, a fishing pier, kayak and boat launches, playgrounds, an indoor banquet hall and a walking path along Clear Creek. Wei said the city would use those sports facilities as practice fields.

Planned improvements

Once the transfer is complete, the city plans to add pickleball and tennis courts, baseball, soccer and football fields, and upgrade the existing fishing piers, Long said. Those improvements could take three to five years. No cost estimate for the upgrades has been made public.

Precedent on the books

The move would follow a familiar playbook. League City acquired the 28-acre Lobit Park from Galveston County in 2023, according to the city's 2024 Parks, Trails and Open Space Master Plan. That plan noted the city's growing population makes acquiring additional park acreage "more critical."

Walter Hall Park is already one of three stops on League City's Clear Creek Paddle Trail, alongside Countryside Park and Heritage Park.
