Girls flag football could arrive at League City high schools as early as the 2028-29 school year after the University Interscholastic League (UIL) approved development of a pilot program.
The UIL Legislative Council approved the proposal Oct. 19, according to the Galveston County Daily News. The pilot would initially establish no more than two classifications. The decision also requires approval from the Texas commissioner of education, and additional rules are still to be determined.
Columnist Corey Greineisen named Clear Springs among the Galveston County schools he envisions competing. Schools would still need to determine whether they have the resources, coaching staff and student interest to field teams, he wrote.
Olympic debut in 2028
The UIL vote comes as flag football gains ground on the world's biggest stages.
The sport will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Men's and women's competitions are scheduled at Exposition Park Stadium, according to the LA28 organizing committee. Games consist of two 20-minute halves on a 70-yard field, with defenders pulling flags from ball carriers' belts instead of tackling.
That Olympic stage now has a college pipeline feeding into it.
NCAA opens a championship path
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program in January 2026. Representatives from all three NCAA divisions approved the move at the 2026 NCAA Convention in the Washington, D.C., area, the NCAA announced.
The designation creates a path to NCAA championship status. A sport needs at least 40 schools sponsoring it at the varsity level and must meet minimum contest and participation requirements. As of summer 2025, NCAA data showed at least 40 schools planned to sponsor flag football at the varsity level in the 2025-26 academic year. Sport leaders anticipated as many as 60 could participate in spring 2026.
Eight sports have completed that journey since the program's creation in 1994, including beach volleyball in 2015 and women's wrestling in 2025.
NFL-backed programs growing in Texas
The Houston Texans launched a girls flag football initiative in 2023. By 2027, more than 270 Texas high schools and nearly 6,000 female athletes are projected to participate in programs supported by the Texans and Dallas Cowboys, according to the Galveston County Daily News.
What comes next
The UIL still needs to finalize rules and secure the state education commissioner's sign-off before any pilot games are played. Students entering ninth grade in fall 2027 would be sophomores when the 2028-29 season begins.
