League City residents can pick up a free tree Thursday, Nov. 5, starting at 8 a.m. at 600 W. Walker St.

The city will give away 300 trees donated by Trees For Houston, according to a city announcement. The giveaway marks League City's Texas Arbor Day celebration.

Three species will be available, 100 of each:

  • Nuttall oaks
  • Sweetgums
  • American sycamores

Trees go out on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The city advises residents to bring a vehicle large enough to haul a tree home.

The giveaway takes place at the Communications and Community Engagement building, across from the League City Police Department.

Why the giveaway

The event is part of League City's push to keep its official Tree City USA designation, a recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation. The foundation named League City a 2023 Tree City USA in April 2024, citing the city's tree-planting and protection work.

That program requires cities to have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation. League City has an arborist on staff, according to the city.

Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation, said in the April 2024 announcement, "The trees being planted and cared for by League City are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life."

Trees For Houston, the nonprofit donating the 300 trees, was founded in 1983. The organization ceremonially planted its one-millionth tree in February 2026 at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston, according to its website.

The city's announcement does not list an end time for the giveaway.
