A League City police vehicle struck another car on the southbound Gulf Freeway feeder road Wednesday, Sept. 16. The officer was trying to catch up to a speeding motorcycle near the League City ballpark.
No one was injured.
The crash happened around 9:20 p.m. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, League City police Officer José Ortega said, as KGTX 7 first reported.
Galveston County Sheriff's Office Capt. Tommy Maffei confirmed no injuries and described what investigators had learned so far. Maffei said preliminary information pointed to a League City officer who was trying to catch up to a motorcycle "traveling at a high rate of speed and possibly fleeing."
As the officer attempted to close the distance, another vehicle made a wide right turn near the ballpark and was struck by the police vehicle, Maffei said.
The identity of the motorcycle rider has not been released. It is unclear whether the rider was involved in the collision or continued to flee. The driver of the vehicle that was struck has not been publicly identified.
The Galveston County Sheriff's Office had not released additional details as of Wednesday night. It is also unclear whether the officer's actions constituted a formal pursuit under League City Police Department (LCPD) policy or an informal attempt to close distance on the motorcycle.
The crash remained under investigation as of Sept. 16. Anyone with information can contact the Galveston County Sheriff's Office.
