League City Animal Care and Adoption Center opens its kennels for free pet adoptions Saturday evening at a Día de los Muertos-themed celebration.

The event, called Día de los Perros (y Gatos!), runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at 755 W. Walker St. It features a pet costume contest, children's activities, food trucks, traditional music and local vendors, according to the city's event calendar.

Organizers are setting up a community ofrenda honoring pets that have died. Visitors can bring a photo of a beloved pet or write the pet's name on a sugar skull to add to the display, KGTX 7 reported.

The costume contest lets attendees dress up their animals for photographs. The community will vote on favorites after the event.

The shelter's adoption center and pet resource center will close at 2 p.m. Saturday to set up. The adoption center reopens at 5 p.m. when the festivities begin.

Despite the event's name focusing on dogs, the city lists it as "Day of the Dog and Cat," and the shelter's own website calls it "Dia de los Perros (y Gatos!)." Cats are part of the celebration, too.

The facility houses 64 dog kennels and 105 cat kennels and averages about 1,600 adoptions per year. A staff of 14 cares for an average of 150 animals per day.

Best Friends Animal Society recognized the shelter in August for achieving no-kill status for the fourth consecutive year, according to a city announcement. The designation is based on a live release rate of 90 percent or higher in 2025.

Admission is free. Residents can call League City Animal Care at 281-554-1377 for more information.
