League City's November election field grew to at least eight candidates after Gregory Van Etten filed to challenge incumbent Council Member Tommy Cones for Position 2.

Van Etten, 40, is a delivery driver who has lived in League City for more than 35 years, according to his ballot application with the City Secretary's Office. His entry makes Position 2 the third contested race on the Nov. 3 ballot, joining the mayor's race and Council Position 1.

Cones, a retired firefighter and 45-year League City resident, filed for re-election on July 20, the first day the window opened.

The full field so far

Five at-large seats are up Nov. 3. Here's where each race stands before the Aug. 17 filing deadline:

Mayor: Incumbent Nick Long faces Council Member Tom Crews, who filed Aug. 4. As we reported Aug. 5, Crews' challenge could trigger an automatic resignation from his Position 3 seat under the city charter.

Position 1: Robert Bruce and Gordon Bethel have both filed for the open seat, according to Community Impact. Incumbent Andy Mann is term-limited.

Position 2: Incumbent Tommy Cones vs. Gregory Van Etten.

Position 6: Sean Doyle, a banker, is the only candidate so far for the open seat. Incumbent Chad Tressler is term-limited.

Position 7: Incumbent Sean Saunders, a captain/paramedic, is running unopposed so far.

Filing deadline approaching

The candidate filing window closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 17. Residents who want to run must file in person at the Office of the City Secretary, 300 West Walker St., during office hours (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday). Applications can also be submitted by email to [email protected] or by fax at 281-554-1020.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old and League City residents for at least one year preceding the election. The filing fee is $50 for council seats and $100 for mayor.

Early voting runs Oct. 19 through Oct. 30. Election day is Nov. 3, with polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
