Galveston County commissioners voted 5-0 on Monday, Aug. 31, to propose a property tax rate of $0.324068 per $100 valuation under Senate Bill 2.

The proposed rate is lower than the county's current adopted rate of $0.325660, which took effect Oct. 1, 2025, as part of a $306.6 million budget. The Galveston Daily News reported that rate was a 2.4% reduction from the prior year. If adopted, the new rate would push the county rate lower still.

Under SB2, the Monday vote at the Commissioners Court special meeting is a required proposal step. A public hearing and final adoption vote are expected at a future meeting.

Commissioner Joe Giusti made the motion. County Judge Mark Henry seconded it. All five members were present: Henry, Giusti, Commissioner Darrell Apffel (Precinct 1), Commissioner Hank Dugie (Precinct 3) and Commissioner Robin Armstrong (Precinct 4). No public comment was received.

Election polling locations, League City contract approved

The court also approved early voting and Election Day polling locations for the Nov. 3 general election, both passing 5-0. County Clerk Dwight D. Sullivan submitted the polling location items.

Commissioners authorized an election services contract between League City and the Galveston County Elections Division. League City Council had already approved its side of that contract on June 23 through Resolution No. 2026-114.

League City voters will choose a mayor and council members for Positions 1, 2, 6 and 7 on Nov. 3. A separate nonbinding question will ask whether the League City Police Department should continue using automated license plate reader cameras at fixed locations on public roadways, per Ordinance 2026-27.

A runoff, if needed, is set for Dec. 12.

Early voting runs Oct. 19 through Oct. 30. League City early voting sites include the League City Annex (174 Calder Dr.), The Crossings (255 Egret Bay Blvd.), Public Works Operations Center (1701 W. League City Pkwy.), Hometown Heroes Park (1001 E. League City Pkwy.) and Bay Colony West HOA (6621 Calder Dr., Dickinson). Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays Oct. 19–23, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays Oct. 26–30.

Eight Election Day locations will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, including the League City Civic Center (400 W. Walker St.), Education Support Center (2425 E. Main St.) and Magnolia Creek Clubhouse (4751 W. League City Pkwy.).

Applications for mail ballots must reach the Galveston County Clerk's office by close of business Oct. 23. Residents can email applications to [email protected].

Residents can sign up for electronic 2026 property tax statements by Sept. 15 through the county tax assessor's office.
