Six new pickleball courts at Lobit Park will open to League City residents in September after nearly a year of construction.
The courts are the centerpiece of Phase 1 of a $2.3 million, two-phase renovation of the park, Community Impact reported. Phase 1 also includes refurbished baseball fields and drainage and irrigation improvements.
The park, which the city acquired from Galveston County in 2022, closed to the public in October 2025. Construction began Oct. 20, 2025, according to the city's Lobit Park project page. Bad weather pushed the Phase 1 completion date to September 2026.
League City Council approved Phase 1 at a workshop on Sept. 24, 2024. Bids opened in August 2025, and the council awarded the construction contract on Sept. 23, 2025.
Resident demand for pickleball has been building. During the city's Parks, Trails, and Open Space Master Plan feedback process in 2023, one resident wrote that existing courts at Hometown Heroes Park were so popular that players from outside League City were using them, leaving locals waiting for open courts.
"Lots more Pickleball courts as the sport is getting very popular among all ages," another resident wrote in July 2023 as part of the same master plan feedback.
The city promoted the coming courts on its official Instagram account on Aug. 24, calling pickleball one of the fastest-growing sports in the country and saying the park would reopen later this fall.
Phase 2 will add two soccer fields, a reconstructed parking lot, a shade structure over the basketball courts, renovated restrooms and a new pedestrian bridge to the park's island with a pergola. The city's project page lists substantial completion for Phase 2 in August 2027.
At the May 26 council meeting, Phase 2 was listed at $5.4 million. Council members discussed shifting its funding from 4B debt to Park Dedication Fees, though the outcome of that proposal has not been confirmed in available public records.
Lobit Park is at 901 Colorado Ave. in League City.
