Seven singer-songwriters played to a crowd of neighbors at League Park on Saturday, Aug. 29, as the League City Folk Association hosted its free monthly music night in the Historic District.
The event, co-hosted with the League City Historical Society, is part of a recurring series held monthly at 512 2nd St. Festivities started at 6 p.m., when a Southern-style bluegrass group called Pickin' on Second led an open song circle. The official program began at 7 p.m.
Tucker Hart, co-founder of the League City Folk Association, told KGTX 7 the series grew out of a post-pandemic need to reconnect.
"After coming out of the pandemic, we just noticed that the community needed to have that boost to bring people together again," Hart said. "So, we decided to do 1960s- and 1970s-style singer-songwriter music."
Hart said the association also wanted to bring attention to the Historical Society, so the group began staging free shows at League Park. The night's program opened with a brief history lesson about 1800s-era schools, presented by representatives from League City's one-room schoolhouse.
The evening's featured performer was Kate Short, a Texas native now based in New York who was wrapping up a national tour. Short is free.
Short's manager, a friend who lives in Friendswood, connected her with Hart. Short played a benefit on Friday, Aug. 28, and then headlined the Aug. 29 gathering.
The series also partners with the City of League City and Visit League City. Performer sign-ups are held at noon on the first Sunday of each month. Attendees can bring their own food, drinks and chairs, according to the League City Historical Society's website.
