Bay Area Service League picked up its second $10,000 grant in three days, this time from S&T Group, as the all-volunteer nonprofit gears up to clothe and feed students before classes start Wednesday, Aug. 12.
BASL's Lisa Holbrook announced the gift on the organization's website Tuesday, Aug. 4, writing that the contribution strengthens the nonprofit's ability to assist local families and support children, teens and adults.
The grant follows a $10,000 award from the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation, which we reported Sunday, Aug. 2. That money specifically funds BASL's Ready for School program, which outfits students in temporary financial need with new clothing. BASL did not specify whether the S&T Group money is earmarked for a particular program or available as general support.
The fundraising streak doesn't stop there. On July 31, the Moody Methodist Church Permanent Endowment Fund awarded BASL a $100,000 grant to expand Ready for School on Galveston Island. Combined with the two $10,000 gifts, the nonprofit has secured $120,000 in announced grants since late July.
Already shopping
Volunteers are already at work. On July 31, BASL outfitted 46 students from Galveston ISD and Odyssey Academy through its Ready for School Shop & Deliver program, marking the first shopping day of the 2026-27 season.
Since 1989, the nonprofit has supplied more than 56,000 Bay Area students with essential school clothing. Its members logged more than 33,200 volunteer hours in the 2025-26 year, contributing an estimated $1.2 million in service value to the Houston-Galveston Bay Area, according to the organization's own tracking.
BASL's four active back-to-school programs for 2026-27 serve ten school districts, including Clear Creek ISD, Friendswood ISD and Dickinson ISD. As we reported July 31, those programs cover clothing, formal wear, at-risk student support and supplemental meals.
Little is publicly known about S&T Group. BASL's post includes a logo suggesting the donor is an LLC, but the company's industry and local ties have not been disclosed.
What's next
BASL's next public event is the Jingle with the Elves Holiday Extravaganza, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 100 E. NASA Parkway, Suite 80, in Webster.
