A colorful new mini mural now greets drivers at the intersection of FM 518 and Texas Avenue, the latest addition to League City's growing collection of painted traffic utility boxes that has transformed street corners across the city.
Artist Jason Patterson painted the FM 518 box, the city announced Sunday, Aug. 2. The installation brings the total number of painted traffic boxes citywide to more than four dozen, according to the city's official announcement.
The program is part of the League City Public Art Initiative, which has used a Traffic Signal Box Mural Contest to recruit local artists and residents to turn drab gray utility cabinets into neighborhood landmarks. League City resident April Zaidi is among past contest winners whose designs have been wrapped onto boxes around town.
Patterson's box joins work by other artists scattered across League City's corridors. In September 2025, artist Anat Ronen painted a "wooden box" mini mural at the corner of FM 646 and Walker Street. The city manager's newsletter that same month highlighted the mini murals alongside other city projects.
Bigger canvas ahead
The traffic boxes aren't the only surfaces getting attention. On May 12, League City City Council approved a $65,000 contract with A&O Design and Production Co. to design and paint a mural on a city water tank at 3rd Street and Railroad Avenue in the Historic District. Council Member Tommy Cones moved the resolution, seconded by Council Member Chad Tressler, and it passed as Resolution No. 2026-87.
That water tank project represents a significant scale-up from the traffic box program, which relies on smaller commissions and contest entries.
The Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee has "Update on City Art Projects" on its agenda for Tuesday, Aug. 4. No on-record comments from Patterson about the FM 518 mural's design were available.
