Clear Creek ISD families can now check whether they qualify for free or reduced-price school meals before classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Under the district's newly released 2026-27 income guidelines, a household of four earning up to $42,900 a year qualifies for free meals, KGTX 7 reported Sunday. The same family earning up to $61,050 qualifies for reduced-price meals. Both thresholds are 2.6% higher nationally than last year, according to USDA figures that took effect Wednesday, July 1.

The numbers are tied to the federal poverty level: free meals cover households at or below 130% FPL, and reduced-price meals extend to 185%.

How to apply

Applications are open now at SchoolCafe (schoolcafe.com/clearcreekisd) and can be submitted any time during the school year. Rebecca Coronado, CCISD's Free & Reduced Meal Benefits Specialist, reviews each application and determines eligibility.

Families already receiving SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, or the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations may qualify by providing their Eligibility Determination Group number. All other households must list every member's name, income information, the last four digits of the signing adult's Social Security number, and a signature.

Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a state agency or court qualify for meal benefits regardless of the household's income.

Parents who disagree with an eligibility decision can request an informal review by calling 281-284-0712 or file a formal appeal with the district's Child Nutrition Hearing Official. The district also encourages families to notify Child Nutrition Services if their income drops or household size grows during the year, since either change could shift eligibility.

Why it matters beyond lunch

When neighboring Dickinson ISD opened its own meal applications in late July, the district noted that eligibility can also unlock waived AP and SAT exam fees and discounted internet service. As we reported July 30, those downstream benefits apply across participating districts.
