Drivers near League City schools will need to watch their speed starting Thursday, Aug. 6, as the city's Traffic & Transportation Department begins activating school zone flashers ahead of the new school year.

The flashers will switch on three weekdays before each district's first day of school, according to a city newsflash published Sunday, Aug. 2. The city lists CCISD's first day as Tuesday, Aug. 11, and Dickinson ISD's as Wednesday, Aug. 12. That puts CCISD flasher activation at Thursday, Aug. 6, and Dickinson ISD flashers at Friday, Aug. 7.

A note for CCISD families: the district's Aug. 11 date is a transition and orientation day for Pre-K, kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-graders, according to KGTX 7. Full classes for all CCISD students begin Wednesday, Aug. 12, as we reported July 29.

The early activation gives crews time to verify each flasher is working and complete any repairs or programming adjustments before students arrive.

New remote monitoring capability

For the first time, the department can program and monitor every city school zone flasher remotely. Staff can confirm flashers are running on schedule, spot problems, and push programming fixes without dispatching a crew to each location.

Residents may notice flashers blinking briefly at odd hours over the next few weeks. That is expected testing, not a malfunction.

Private schools on a different schedule

Flashers at private school campuses, including Bay Area Christian School and St. Mary's Catholic School, will not activate early. Those systems turn on each school's own first day of classes: Tuesday, Aug. 11 for Bay Area Christian and Wednesday, Aug. 12 for St. Mary's.

How to report a problem

The department is also repainting crosswalks and inspecting signage at school zones citywide. Residents who spot a malfunctioning flasher can email [email protected] or call 281-554-1199.

Dickinson ISD's League City campuses, including Elva C. Lobit Middle School and Louis G. Lobit Elementary, are part of the activation schedule. Dickinson ISD students report Wednesday, Aug. 12, according to the city, though KGTX 7 lists the district's first day as Thursday, Aug. 13.
