League City residents who want to vote in the Nov. 3 midterm election have until Monday, Oct. 5, to register or update their address with the Galveston County Clerk's office.
The deadline matters locally. The Galveston County ballot includes a contested mayor's race between Nick Long and Tom Crews, five City Council seats and Proposition A. That proposition is a nonbinding question on whether the League City Police Department should keep using automated license plate reader cameras on public roadways, an issue that has drawn organized opposition.
Texas does not allow new voter registration online, Houston Public Media reported. Eligible residents must print, sign and mail a paper application to their county election office at least 30 days before Election Day, per the Texas Secretary of State's office. Applications are available on the Secretary of State's website or by request.
Galveston County residents can mail completed forms to the Galveston County Clerk, P.O. Box 17253, Galveston, TX 77552-7253. They can also deliver them in person to the Galveston County Records and Election Center, 10000 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Suite 1152, Texas City. The office phone number is (409) 770-5108.
Voters who have moved within Texas can update their address online through the Secretary of State's My Voter Portal at votetexas.gov.
Check your status
Roughly 1.2 million Texans have been placed on voter suspense lists after counties failed to verify their addresses by mail, Houston Public Media reported Sept. 2. Those voters also face the Oct. 5 deadline to confirm their addresses.
Alicia Pierce, a spokesperson for the Texas Secretary of State's office, said in the Sept. 2 report that checking registration is worth the effort for everyone. "It's a great idea for all voters to check their voter registration information and ideally do it before the … registration deadline," Pierce said.
Voters on the suspense list who miss the Oct. 5 deadline can still cast a ballot on Election Day. They will need to complete a statement of residency at the polling place to confirm their address, Houston Public Media reported.
No Galveston County-specific suspense list figure was available. The statewide total includes roughly 300,000 Harris County residents.

Seven League City Election Day polling locations will be open Nov. 3, including Hometown Heroes Park, the League City Civic Center at 400 W. Walker St. and the Education Support Center at 2425 E. Main St.
